Southwest Medical University (SWMU) Founded in 1951 is a full-time institution of higher learning in Sichuan Province. It is located in Luzhou city in Sichuan Province. It has two campuses – Zhongshan and Chengbei- covering more than 2000 mu.  In 2005, Luzhou Medical College’s former name changed to Southwest Medical University.

Ningbo University is only about two hours away from the Capital city, Hangzhou.

International Accreditation:

Southwest Medical University is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), PMDC, ECFMG, WFME, and WCAME. It is also approved by BMDC (Bangladesh) and NMC (India). Graduated Students from Southwest Medical University can apply for USMLE, UKMLA/PLAB, GMC, AMC, and almost all the medical licensing certifications.

MOE Listed Medical University:

Southwest Medical University is one of the MOE-listed Universities among the list of 44 Medical Schools in China offering a Clinical Medicine (MBBS) Program in English. The Southwest Medical School started accepting international students 2009 to teach the MBBS Program in English.

MBBS Fee for Pakistani Students is approximately 14 Lakh PKR per year for the two Semesters.

The Clinical Medicine (English taught) Program consists of a Six years of Medicine Program which includes five years of Clinical Medicine study and the Sixth year of the Clinical Internship. The Teaching Medium is fully English as it is a listed University.

Southwest Medical University has three affiliated hospitals. The affiliated hospital of Southwest Medical University, The dental hospital of Southwest Medical University, and the Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital of Southwest Medical University.

There are 9 primary doctoral programs, 9 postdoctoral research stations, 31 primary master’s programs, 27 professional master’s programs, and 59 undergraduate programs.

Admission Requirments:

There is no entrance test to apply. International students applying to Southwest Medical University for Clinical Medicine (MBBS) must have a minimum of 70% marks in Senior High School (Grade 12). The age limit to apply is 18-25. IELTS and TOEFL are not required for the admission. Students can Apply Online to start their admission process to get admission in the medical program.

International Students:

Southwest Medical University was qualified to confer degrees to international students in 2003. It began its undergraduate program in Clinical Medicine in 2004 and began the post-graduate program in 2013. At present more than 300 international students studying Clinical Medicine (MBBS) on campus, they come from 12 countries including the U.S.A., India, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Ghana.

The international students who have graduated from the university have subsequently taken the License Examination in their home countries. The passing rate is 81.9%. Up to now, SWMU has trained 23 groups of short-term international students in Traditional Chinese Medicine. These students have come from Germany, Portugal, Spain, and the U.S.A.

Facilities:

Southwest Medical University has almost all the amenities for international students inside the campus. The School has an inside campus dormitory for international students which is very safe and secure. The university has Study areas, playgrounds, a Muslim cafeteria, ATM Machines, a Hospital, and Supermarkets. CCTV cameras are installed all over the campus and even in the Dormitory. Students are not allowed to live outside the campus during their Study period.

The Ningbo University School of Medicine has a quota of 50 overseas students to enroll every year in the Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) Program

Scholarships:

Southwest Medical University offers freshmen Scholarships of 6000 RMB ($1000) to Excellent students enrolled in Clinical Medicine (MBBS). The University provides annual Provincial government scholarships ranging from 10,000 RMB to 15,000 RMB, awarded based on students’ academic performance. The Southwest Medical School provides One Belt and One Road scholarships specifically for ASEAN and CIS countries. These scholarships are available for programs in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Mandarin Chinese language.

The MBBS Fee for Pakistani Students is approximately 17 Lakh PKR per year. This cost does not include the food or traveling expenses. Food costs at Ningbo University are 1000–2000 RMB per month, while traveling tickets are 5000–7000 RMB (one way), depending on the country.

Southwest Medical University, MBBS Fee for International Students 2025-2026:

Southwest Medical University is currently accepting international students for the Fall intake, with a minimum enrollment of 60. Students can apply for the Clinical Medicine (MBBS) program after the 30th of March every year to secure their MBBS seat. The deadline to apply is the 30th of October (or Depends).
